In the book, 'Early Deaths of Raleigh County 1853-1875', pg 25, by Pauline Hage, is an entry for this memorial. I thought you might want to add to his bio.
" Claiborne Curtis died of dropsy. He was a minister. No other info given.(from recorded deaths at county).
this stone in memory of Clayborne is located in a wooded area behind Jamescrest Addition. It states he was born Nov 15 1868. He served in the War of 1812 and preached the first sermon of the Church of Christ in Raleigh County in 1846. Raleigh was not formed until 1850, You will see the name of Clayborne (Claivorne) Cirtos numerous times in the early Raleigh County marriages, Vol. 1, as the officiating minister.
In the 1850 Census of Raleigh County Caiborne(as listed) Curtis was 59 years old, a farmer and his wife Martha was 44 years old. They had a son Claiborn A., who was 15 years old then. He later married Elizabeth Warden on Dec 29, 1853.
Martha Curtis is buried beside Clayborne Curtis and died in 1898. Their graves are the only two located in the plot in the wooded area near the Biggs Cemetery."
