Member of the 7th West Virginia Calvary, Company H (Formerly 8th Virginia Infantry)(Union). He participated in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run and deserted Nov 12th, 1862 taking his Enfield rifle with him. There were rumors that he defected to the Confederacy but there is no record to validate this. He is rumored to have picked up a rifle off of a dead soldier after defecting. The rifle is still in the family to this day. It is a US Model 1855 Springfield.
