Gilbert J. Martin, 87, of St. Petersburg, FL passed away Saturday, October 22, 2011. Born on Dec. 7, 1923 in Van Buren, ME, son of the late Baptiste and Marie "Cyr" Martin, he served in the army during WWII, fighting in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded.

Gil was a former resident of Braddock Heights, MD. Gilbert completed the JFK 50 mile ultra-marathon five times. He loved skiing, cycling and ballroom dancing. After retiring from C.W. Wright Contractors, where he was employed as a crane operator and mechanic, he owned and operated the Lakeside Campground in Enfield, ME. Gilbert had been a resident of St. Petersburg, Florida for the past twenty years and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Gilbert will be missed by his loving daughters from his former wife, Barbara McCutcheon Martin; Barb Cavelius and her husband, George of Elkridge, MD, Patricia Lingg and her husband, Greg of Middletown, MD and Michele Weeks and her husband, Ken of Draper, Utah; his grandchildren,Katherine Lingg, Benjamin Lingg, Joshua Weeks and Christian Weeks; his brothers, Raymond Martin and his wife, Connie of Lincoln, ME and Robert Martin and his wife, Dorothy of East Hartford, CT; his sister, Joann Dumont of Howland, ME; and many nieces and nephews.

Thank you to the Bay Pines V.A. Hospital staff. Gilbert's family would like to express their gratitude to Jacquelyn Smith, his companion for the last fifteen years of his life.

Family and friends may attend the Committal Service at the Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St Petersburg, FL on Friday, November 4, 2011 at 10 a.m.
