Barbara McCutcheon Martin, age 93 of Braddock Heights, Maryland, passed away on November 26, 2019. She was born August 4, 1926, in Pasadena, California. The daughter of the late Helen McCullagh McCutcheon and Robert J. McCutcheon.
At a very young age Barbara worked at the family business, the McCutcheon Apple Products. Barbara was a graduate of Frederick High School and she graduated in 1948 from the University of Maryland with an education degree. Her public-school Physical Education teaching career spanned 31 years. She retired from Middletown High School in 1990. During her teaching career she coached diving and track and field and established the Middletown High School Ski Club. She received the Frederick High School Distinguished Alumni award in 2008. Barbara was an avid springboard diver. She was often seen in the 1940s practicing at the Braddock Heights Pool.
She held the DC Metropolitan and the New York Metropolitan diving titles. In 1948 she placed 6th in the US Olympic Diving Trails. In 1978 she was one of the first athletes to be inducted into the YMCA Frederick County Sports Hall of Fame. Barbara was a member of the VFW Lady’s Nine Hole Golf Club for over 20 years and enjoyed her many friendships. Since 1992 she had earned 110 gold medals while participating in swimming and track and field events at the Maryland Senior Olympics. In 2012 she was inducted into Maryland Senior Olympic Hall of Fame. Barbara loved to travel and if the car was moving, she wanted to be in it. Barbara enjoyed spending her free time golfing, skiing or swimming at the beach with her family. She was happiest when spending time with her family. She was a beloved mother, sister and friend.
Barbara was preceeded in death by her husband Gilbert Joseph Martin of Maine, sisters Essie Smith of Davis, CA and Helen Devlin of Lake Placid NY, brothers Robert and William McCutcheon of Braddock Heights, MD and son-in-law Kenneth Lee Weeks of Draper Utah. She is survived by her sister Rebecca McCutcheon Griffin of Frederick, her three daughters, Barbara Jeanne Cavelius (George) of Elkridge, MD; Patricia Lingg (Gregory) of Middletown, MD; and Michele Weeks of Draper, UT; four grandchildren: Katherine and Benjamin Lingg, and Joshua and Christian Weeks; and one sister in-law Rheta McCutcheon of Braddock Heights, MD. Barbara was a member of the Frederick Presbyterian Church Since 1938.
A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, December 7, at the Frederick Presbyterian Church. Light refreshments will follow at 115 W. 2nd St, Frederick, MD 21701. All are welcome.
