William James McCutcheon Sr., 87, passed away quietly at his home in Braddock heights on Sunday April 22, surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed by his much loved wife Rheta Shank McCutcheon. They were married on February 22, 1957 and were together for more than 61 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, where the two were married.
Bill was born on February 25, 1931 in Pasadena, California and was the son of the late Robert Johnstone McCutcheon Sr. and Helen McCullagh McCutcheon. When he was two years old, his family returned to Braddock Heights, a place he continued to call home for the next 85 years.
Bill graduated from Middletown High School in 1951 and then served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956 as a B-29 engine mechanic. After his service , he returned home to continue helping in the family business that was started by his father and grandfather, which became McCutcheon's Apple Products. He and his brother, Robert Jr., became co-owners of the business and dedicated their time and talents to expand it from a small cider producing company to one which currently produces a large variety of products, including preserves, jellies, and fruit butters as well as cider. The family business, celebrating its 80th anniversary, remains successful and currently employs more than a dozen family members.
Bill was the family genealogist, maintaining a database of over 1,800 family members, and was an active member of the Braddock Heights Historical Society. He also enjoyed his RV, traveling with his wife on several trips that took them to California, Florida, Canada, and Maine. He was a family man, always eager to help his sons with any of their activities or projects, whether it involved hobbies or work. He enjoyed biking on the towpath and boating with his catamaran on local lakes and at Fenwick Island during summer vacations. In 2006 he purchased a 1901 Cagney steam locomotive, similar to the one he operated as a teenager in the Braddock Heights Park. He built a circular track in his backyard, and many enjoyable hours were spent by Bill and his family operating this train and offering rides to family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five sons, William Jr. and wife Brenda of Braddock Heights, Edward (Ted) of Frederick, Michael and wife Amy of Thurmont, Philip and wife Lynn of Braddock Heights, and Steven and wife Debbie of Middletown. Also surviving are two sisters, Barbara McCutcheon Martin of Braddock Heights and Rebecca McCutcheon Griffin of Frederick as well as grandchildren Meghan (Josh), Ryan, Brad, Kelly (Kirby), Colleen, Sam, Jacob, Joey, Caleb, Cyrus, Teddy, and Maddy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Johnstone McCutcheon Jr. of Braddock Heights and by his sisters Essie Smith of Davis, CA and Helen Devlin of Lake Placid, NY.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 26 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 27, 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church, 107 W. Main St., Middletown.
