Albert Duane Smith went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of November 20, 2012, after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. He peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his loving family.

Duane was gently and diligently cared for through his final days by his adoring wife, Ginger, his cherished daughter, Cindy, his devoted granddaughters, Dawn Montgomery and Laura DeLamere and Dawn's husband, Richard Montgomery, who held steadfast as the rock for our family through this difficult time.

Duane was born on October 29, 1928, to Marion and Ruth Smith in Carey, Idaho. He married Ginger Smith on September 23, 1961. In Ginger, he found his soul mate and the love of his life. The couple quickly became "each other's everything." They had three children, Janice, from a previous marriage, Cindy, and Brandon, also known as "Ricky" in his early years.

Duane belonged to the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 296 for 35 years. For many years he owned his own business, Smith Remodel and Repair, where he honed his skills as an amazing woodworker and admired craftsman. Every customer of Duane's quickly became a friend and he enjoyed turning their visions into reality.

Duane had many hobbies and interest throughout his life that included traveling, camping, fishing, gardening, woodworking, moseying around his workshop and playing music.

He and Ginger played music together in a band called The Moonlighters, where Duane played bass guitar and sang alongside his wife. The couple played music together from the early 1960's to the mid 1980's where they had the honor and privilege of playing music with many talented musicians, one of which was their niece, Connie Brain.

Although Duane enjoyed many things in life, the activity that brought him the most joy was spending time in the company of his family, close friends and with Ginger, his wife of 51 years. Ginger is grateful for every moment she spent with Duane. He was her partner in work and play, her best friend, and the half that makes her whole.

All those who had the pleasure of Duane's quick smile and ready handshake came to know him as his family always has, as an amazingly generous man who never turned away someone in need, who rarely spoke a harsh word and someone who had an abundance of patience for all those he encountered. Duane had a gentle heart, a strong gaze, and an almost extinct moral character that allowed him to see the good in people. He was a true gentleman.

Duane was the patriarch of his family; he was the pillar of strength through the difficult times. He taught his family the importance of loving each other, a little kindness goes a long way, and life is about who you are while on this earth and the legacy you leave behind.

Duane is survived by his wife, Ginger Smith; son, Brandon Smith; daughters: Janice Maynard and Cindy (Jake) Wikoff; a sister, Bertha (Don) Hartley; numerous nieces and nephews; the apples of his eye, his 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, all of whom will always hold a special place in their hearts for their "Papa"; and so many friends that thought the world of him.

Duane was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters: Marion Roy Smith, Buford Eugene Smith, Schuyler Edward Smith, Eleanor Roberta Conley, Alice Iola Ange, Shirley Marie Smith, Hazel Lois Smith and Eldon L. Smith.

The family would like to offer their most sincere thanks to Saint Luke's Hospice and to Duane's hospice nurse, Linda Graham R.N., who treated Duane with the utmost dignity and respect. She was there for the family with unwavering empathy and unending understanding and support during our family's most painful time. She is truly an angel on earth.

A celebration of Duane's life will be held at 4:30 in the afternoon on Sunday, November 25, 2012, followed by a reception at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel located at 5400 Fairview Avenue, Boise ID 83706.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Idaho Food Bank in memory of Duane.
