The death of Major John P. Sheldon, at Winfield, Ill., on the 19th, is recorded. The old settlers of the territory of Wisconsin do not need to be told who Major Sheldon is or was, for his name and history are familiar to most of them. A resident of Lafayette county, he was in territorial times prominent in the politics of the territory, and generally had some connection with the press. He was acquainted with the leading men of the nation, and in his day was a man of force and influence. He had disappeared for some years from public view, and at his death was 79 years old.

The adjourement of this court last evening was until 10 o'clock on Tuesday morning. This is owing to the death of Major John P. Sheldon, at the residence of his daughter, the wife of Judge Drummond.
