Mary V. Ballinger is the daughter of Nathan H. and Margaret (Hubbard) Ballinger. She graduated from the Spiceland Academy and taught school in New Castle prior to her marriage.

On December 22 1876 she married William Oscar Barnard in Spiceland, Indiana, a Henry County attorney, who became a member of Congress. They were married for over 62 years. They had four children: Paul, George Murphy, Ralph Waldo, and Ruth.

Mrs. Barnard was a birthright Friend. She also took an active interest in the Henry County Historical Society.
