Jean Mouton is considered the "Father of Lafayette". In 1821 he donated the 5 and one half arpents of land for the Catholic Church; The Church of St. John of Vermilion" now Cathedral of St. John The Evangelist and then in September 1824 twelve lots for the Parish of Lafayette Courthouse.

He is also a Patriot of the American Revolution as his gravestone also has a marker placed by the Galvez Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution designating such honor.
