Another of Traer's longtime business men was claimed by death early Saturday morning when R. J. Ladd, 70, succumbed to a heart attack at his home. In failing health several years, Mr. Ladd returned Sunday of last week from a Marshalltown hospital where he spent several days for treatment for heart disease. His condition showed some improvement, and he was up and around his home much of the time on Friday. He was stricken suddenly about 3 a. m. Saturday and died within a few minutes. The Rev. J. J. Snyder, pastor, conducted the funeral service Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church in Traer. Tom Nelson, of the Traer school faculty sang, accompanied by Mrs. Nelson. Mrs. F. W. Scharfenberg, a longtime neighbor, cared for the flowers. Casket bearers were Joe Tomlinson, H. Q. Everts, Otto F. Moeller, F. A. Wignall. R. C. Wood and Dr. C. H. Brawn. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery, where members of the Traer Masonic lodge conducted a committal service at the grave.
Roma John Ladd, born January 5, 1872, on a farm six miles south of Traer, was one of the twin sons of Levi and Margarete Ladd, pioneer residents of north Tama county who settled in Traer in 1873, the year the town was founded. He was the last surviving member of the family of three children; his twin brother, Rema, died about forty years ago, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Boone MacDonald, also preceded him in death. Levi Ladd was one of Tama county's earliest produce merchants. Roma Ladd was a country school teacher for a short time after graduating from Traer high school, ,then joined his father in the business which the latter had founded in Traer in 1875. The firm of Ladd & Son did an extensive business for years with buyers and stations in many towns along the Rock Island railroad, extending into northwestern Iowa. After Levi Ladd's death, R. J. Ladd continued the business until he sold in 1919 to a Grundy Center company which failed three years later. Mr. Ladd again took over the produce house in 1922 in partnership with John Vorba, now manager of the Traer liquor store, but sold in November of the same year to George Schreiber.
After the latter's death several years later, the firm of Ladd and Vorba was re-established, continuing until Mr. Ladd retired from the business because of ill health about five years ago. For two or three years in the early 30's, he also operated a farm near Cylinder in northwest Iowa which he owned for years.
Mr. Ladd was married in 1903 to Della Truesdell in Traer. Shortly after their wedding they bought a residence which has always since been their home. Two daughters, Alpha (Mrs. Joseph) Koerner of Los Angeles California and Roma Jean, (Mrs. Sidney) Dean of Almeda, California were born to the couple. Mrs. Koerner arrived Sunday in Des Moines by airplane to attend the funeral service and was brought to Traer by auto by Mr. and Mrs. Julius Nuesner and daughter Dorothy, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Young, all of Des Moines, relatives of her husband. Roma Jean who did not come to the funeral, expects to visit later this year.
Mr. Ladd was united with the Traer Methodist church September 4, 1921 and served many years as a member of the official board. He was for several years a member of the Traer town council and active in other community affairs. For many years he was affiliated with the Traer Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his widow, the two daughters already mentioned and one granddaughter, Suzanne Dean.
Present from a distance at the funeral service, besides those named above were Lloyd L. Boone, of Estherville; Mrs. N. .O. Osher, of Wallingford, Iowa; Dr. and Mrs. F. T. Ladd, Cedar Rapids; and Mrs. N. O. Halverson, Cedar Falls.

Son of Levi and Margaret McKerral Ladd.
Husband of Eudella Truesdell.
