Stephen was a member of the Masons starting in 1779. He fought in the Rev. War (for four months in 1780). He was the owner of 116 High Street, the McLellan Mansion (now the Cumberland Club), from its inception in 1802. In 1810, he was forced to sell the property for $2,000.00, and remained on hand to work there as manager in the building's new capacity as a boarding house.

Stephen married (2) Hannah Ilesley 22 Feb 1803 in Portland ME. Stephen and Hannah had 4 children. Their children were Mary (1803-1831), Isaac (1806-1812), Augusta (1808-1812) and Charlotte (1810-1854). All of their children were born in Portland ME.
