Obituary (Macon County Times, July 1, 1971
The death angel visited the Chitwood Hospital in Lafayette on Thursday afternoon and called for Mr. Jonas Clay Hopkins. He was born August 5, 1890 and passed to his eternal home on June 17, 1971 being 80 years, 10 months and 12 days old. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Mai Jones November, 1908, and to this union were born 12 children, with little Jimmy preceeding him in death.
Survivors include Mrs. Delbert Whitney, Mrs. Carlene Woods, Mrs. Ray Andrews and Mrs. Earl Hire, Mr. Arthur Clay and Roger Hopkins all of Indianapolis, Indiana, William Hopkins, Mack Hopkins and J.B. Hopkins, all of Westmoreland, Mrs. Delton Herald and Mrs. J.T. Marsh of Westmoreland; 18 grandchildren (illegible.
Uncle Shug bore his suffering with patience the best he could and would often tell the children he wished Jesus would come and take hime home. He was a Christian, a good husband, a loving father, a good neighbor and was loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Children you who are not ready to meet God, his last prayer just before he died that God would save them before it was too late. We feel our loss is heaven's gain and weep not as those that have no hope. He is just waiting on the other side to welcome all home. He left this world of sin and suffering to the children and all who are not prepared to meet him.
If his smiling face you want to see up in heaven is where he will be.
