Nelson Butler was a Private in Company "A" of the 29th Wisconsin infantry during the Civil war. Enlisting from Marshall, Dane County, Wisc. on August 12, 1862, Nelson possibly served with the unit during and through the Vicksburg campaign, including the Battles of Port Gibson/Grand Gulf, Champion Hill, and the Vicksburg siege (which ended on July 4, 1863) before falling ill and dying in St. Louis, Mo.
