Obituary as published in the Asbury Park Press on December 2, 2012

Gilbert Joseph Robinson, 88, of Spring Lake, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was a devoted husband and father, and a familiar face in Spring Lake, the town he had called home for nearly 40 years. Born on Aug. 20, 1924 at Fort Eustis, Va. to Army Brigadier General Joseph Robinson and Simone Gaujot Robinson, Gilbert was the third of their six children. Like all Army families, the Robinsons were relocated often. Gil attended Texas A & M for a year before serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. As a returning veteran, he enrolled at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he earned his degree in textile engineering.

When his early career took Gil to New York, he renewed his acquaintance with Elisabeth ("Betty") Patterson, another RISD graduate, who worked as a designer, also in the city's textile industry. Though they hadn't known one another well at school, Gil and Betty began dating. They were married in June of 1955. In the mid-seventies, Gil and Betty, along with their sons, David and James, moved from Manhattan to Betty's hometown of Spring Lake. There the couple restored the house in which the family still lives. Gil soon became known as a helpful friend and neighbor, a tireless volunteer and involved citizen. Always courteous as well as knowledgeable, he attended Council Meetings and took a lively interest in the goings-on of his adopted town. In addition, Gil coached soccer and Little League baseball, and taught Sunday school at St. Catherine's. Later, he became active in the Spring Lake Historical Society and, more recently, in the Preservation Alliance of Spring Lake. As an unofficial member of the Spring Lake Garden Club, he also did some of the heavy work involved in the club's gardening projects at Holy Trinity Church.

Gil is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, David and James; and granddaughter, Charlotte Wynn Robinson. He will be greatly missed.
