Martin Luther Davenport was born in Texas though his parents were living in Love County, Oklahoma at the time. His mother traveled to Texas to have her baby in her parents' home. The family lived on a farm near Overbrook in Love County, Indian Territory. A move in 1893 took them further north into Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, to what was called the Anderson Community. They lived on Salt Creek just south of Anderson School.
Luther was only four years old when his mom died in 1896. His father George William Davenport, didn't think he could take care of the three little sons, so they were separated and sent to various homes. Luther was placed with neighbors down the road. However, he didnd't like that arrangement and kept running away and back to where his father lived. Finally, his father let him remain with him and for awhile they lived in a tent. Luther later told that his father didn't know how to cook much of anything and their meals usually consisted of blackeyed peas. He added he couldn't stand blackeyed peas when he grew up.
On March 24, 1915, Luther and Mary Lee Pike Wilson were married in Tecumseh, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. They
lived for quite some time in Pottawatomie County where Luther tried his hand at farming, and at one time ran a cafe in Macomb. He took a salesman job with L. B. Price and eventually moved his family to Oklahoma City. He worked for over fifty years with this company before retiring.
His golden years were spent with his wife Mary in the home provided by their son, Kermitt. Luther and Mary celebrated their 70th anniversary in 1985.
Luther was often called M.L., or in our family we called him Uncle Lute. He loved his family and kept in contact with his extended family throughout his life. Luther died on July 7, 1990, in Oklahoma City.
