Vernon was blessed with 96 yrs 7 mos 12 days of life. ~ Vernon and Vera Hughey married May 21, 1939 They had been childhood neighbors and friends in Grimes County.
He served in the U.S. Navy – 96th N.C.B. Sea Bees from 1942 until 1945. He was stationed in the Philippines. He served as a Harris County Reserve Deputy Sheriff in the 1960's. He retired Harrison Equipment Company in 1984. He served as Past Master of Masonic Lodge 1053 in League City, TX., and served as Past Worthy Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 915, in So. Houston, TX. He was a member of the Woodman of the World. As a young man, he traded 2 pigs for his first fiddle. Many years later, he played his fiddle in a musical group called the "Rhythm Wranglers". Vernon was still playing his fiddle just a few weeks before his death at Deer Park Nursing Home for his fellow residents.
Vernon Mitchell was preceded in death by the love of his life, Vera. They were blessed to enjoy 74 yrs 1 mo and 20 days as husband and wife. They were apart only 303 days before he joined her in Glory. His parents and all of his siblings also preceded him. One of them was his twin sister Vivian Mitchell Harris
~~ He is survived by SON, James Mitchell with wife Glenda of Deer Park; GRANDCHILDREN: Misty Bonham with husband Michael of Humble and Christy Ham with husband Jarad of La Porte; GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN Madison Bonham, Makenzie,Bonham, Matthew Bonham, Cody Saylor, Tanner Ham and Laurynn Ham.
