Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the Union Army in Portsmouth, Virginia. He served as a First Sergeant and was awarded the CMOH as a Corporal in Company B, 36th U.S. Colored Infantry for action on September 30 1864 at Chapin's Farm, Virginia. His citation reads "Having had his arm mutilated, making immediate amputation necessary, he loaded and discharged his piece with one hand and urged his men forward; this wihin 30 yards of the enemy's works."
