July 20, 1941 - Dec 12, 2012 EDMOND Troy died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on December 12, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Seminole, OK on July 20, 1941, to Troy N. and Dollie (Twiggs) Smith. Troy was reared in Shawnee and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1959. He attended Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma State University before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1961. While in the Navy, Troy entered the nuclear submarine force and honorably served on the USS Gudgeon (SS567), USS Sam Houston (SSBN609) and the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN601) "nine years, nine patrols, no regrets." Upon his return to Oklahoma, he, along with nine other men, founded Sonic Industries. During his career with Sonic, he was instrumental in forming the Sonic Advertising Trust and drafted the plans for the first 1200 Sonic Drive-Ins. He left Sonic in 1987 and remained a franchisee until his death. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susie, of Edmond, OK; five sons, David Smith, Travis Smith and Cayce Moore, Kyle Smith, Eric Smith and wife Donna, and Troy III "Trey" and wife Kimberly Smith; five grandchildren; mother, Dollie Smith; one sister, Leslie Baugh; mother-in-law, Betty Heath; sisters-in-law, Sandy and Tracy Jividen, Sheri and Levi Maples, Sidney and Steve Sears; brother-in-law, David and Maurine Heath; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; lifelong friends of 65 years, C. Farrell Lewis and wife Mary Lynn, and William "Bill" Warren and wife Jane; and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Troy N. Smith; and his father-in-law, Hugh Heath, Jr. Funeral Services will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 16, 2012. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the charity of your choice .
