Lone Tree Reporter, Thursday, December 11, 1975

William Smothers, 75, of Lone Tree, died Thursday evening at Mercy Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree, with the Rev. Wilbur Nolte officiating. Burial was in the Lone Tree Cemetery.

He was born Aug. 20, 1900, in Springfield, to Ora and Nora Pence Smothers. On May 23, 1919, he married Etta Duehneman at Des Moines. Mr. Smothers was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Bernard (Kathy) Dougherty, of Urbandale; seven sons, Wilford, of Mundelein, Ill., Jerald, Marion , and Robert, all of Iowa City, Berle, of Sumner, Lowell, of Clarence, and William Jr., of Martelle; 28 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dwight, of Venice, Fla., and Earl, of Seattle, Wash.; and two sisters, Mrs. Dean (Iola) Bryant, of Iowa City, and Mrs. Don (Doris) Bryant, of Coralville.

Two brothers and an infant son preceded him in death.

All sons served as pallbearers.
