Second Lieutenant Chase served as a Navigator with the 52nd Bomb Squadron, 29th Bomb Group from Gowen Field, in Idaho. He was killed in the crash of U.S. Army Air Corps B-17F Flying Fortress #42-5215, one mile north of the Mountain Home Army Airfield, Idaho.

The crew killed were:

2nd Lt. Rector Arney, Pilot
2nd Lt. Thomas M. Homer, Co-pilot
2nd Lt. Lewis A. Lillard, Bombardier
S/Sgt. Richard M. Campbell, Flight Engineer
Sgt. John W. Strickland, Asst. Engineer
Sgt. Otis L. Blackwood, Radio Operator
Sgt. Melvin Kaizer, Gunner
