A Dalton High School teacher was killed Tuesday morning when her van hit a tractor-trailer on I-75.

A Dalton High School teacher Demera Robinson, 34, was the daughter of the school's principal, Debbie Freeman.

Demera Robinson, 34, taught English at the northwest Georgia school, a spokeswoman for the Dalton school district said. Robinson was the daughter of the school's principal, Debbie Freeman.

"Demera was an excellent teacher who devoted herself to her students and her family," Steve Bartoo, associate principal of Dalton High School, said in a statement. "She has taught many of the same students for the past four years as part of the school's College Insight/AVID program, designed to provide additional support to students who are working to be the first in their families to attend college. As a school community, we are deeply saddened by this news."

Robinson, of Ringgold, was also a sponsor the student council, according to the school's website. She began her teaching career 12 years ago in the Dalton district.

Robinson was southbound on I-75 in Tunnel Hill when she struck the slow-moving tractor-trailer in the rear, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol told the AJC. The crash remains under investigation.

Students return to school Wednesday following the holiday break. Basketball games scheduled for Tuesday night will be postponed.
