One of Jay, New York's best-liked residents, Mark A. Devlin, died at 10 o'clock Monday morning, September 16, 1957, at the Southmayd Nursing Home in Upper Jay, New York, owned and operated by his son, Eugene. Mr. Devlin's death was attributed to a heart and bronchial condition. He had been in poor health for years. He would have been 69 years old had he lived to October 19. Taken seriously ill Saturday morning, his condition grew worse and he was brought to the nursing home that evening. At his bedside when the end came were his sons, Jack and Eugene and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Eugene Devlin.

Mr. Devlin was born at Jay, October 19, 1888, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Bridget (Hurley) Devlin. A life-long resident of Jay he was well known throughout the Au Sable Valley, where he enjoyed the respect and friendship of its residents. As a boy he attended the Jay grade school and later Saranac Lake high school in Saranac Lake, New York. One of his first jobs after leaving school was with the express company of Lake Placid.

He was married to Grace Bartlett, September 7, 1911. He was for many years engaged in the lumbering business. At one time he owned several woodlots from which he hauled pulp and logs to the J. & J. Rogers Company in Au Sable Forks, New York. He also was a wood jobber in the Jay mountains over a long period.

Mr. Devlin worked his farm in addition to his wood-jobbing activities. For a number of years he supplied the Lake Placid Club and several other hotels in Lake Placid, New York with meat while in the cattle business.

An active man during all his working career, Mr. Devlin was devoted to his family as well as his business, a helpful neighbor and friend.

Besides his wife he was survived by his daughters, Mrs. Gerald Carron of Schenectady, New York, Mrs. James Crowley of Saranac Lake, Mrs. John Wilkins of Lake Placid, sons Jack and Eugene of Jay and Robert Devlin of Au Sable Forks, 19 grandchildren, his sisters, Mrs. Ernest Stakes of Antonio, Texas, Mrs. Henry Braun of Hicksville, Long Island, his brothers, J. Vernon Devlin and M. Hurley Devlin of Lake Placid and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, September 18, 1957, at Holy Name Church in Au Sable Forks. Rev. Father Ralph A. Hoffman was celebrant of the mass of requiem.

Burial was in the family plot in the church cemetery. Bearers were William and Paul Hurley, Judson and Edward Ware of Lake Placid, Foster Daggett of Upper Jay and Thomas Tarrant of Lake Placid.
