Might have been born in Nova Scotia, Canada or Pennsylvania. The 1850 Federal Census says Pennsylvania, but his son John's death certificate states "N. Scotia". James' parentage is unknown.
Married to Eliza Musselman 1839-40, in Pennsylvania. Father of six children.
A shoemaker by profession, he lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from at least 1848, until he apparently became terminally ill.
Probably died in Northampton County, PA between 1859 and June 1860, but might have died in Philadelphia and was buried in Asbury Methodist Episcopal Churchyard there.
