Son of William and Louisa (MYRINDA) Hollingshead, he married Charlotte SPAKE 10 November, 1849 at West Unity, Williams Co., OH. Their two eldest children, William and Mary, were born in Williams Co., OH. The couple moved to the Hollingshead family enclave in Penn Twp., St. Joseph Co., IN before the birth of their third child, Alvada. The remaining three of their children, James A., Theodore Augustus and Thomas, were born there as well. Nathaniel Hollingshead enlisted 6 May, 1864 in Co. H, 138th Indiana Volunteer Infantry for a 100 day enlistment spent guarding railroads in Georgia. He was discharged on 20 September, 1864. In the 1890 Veteran's Census, he claimed to have lingering rheumatic symptoms as the result of sleeping on dirt floors while in the service. He died very suddenly of a massive heart attack on 31 October, 1893.
