Raymond, of Wellington, passed away at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus.

The son of William E "Bill" and Bessie Estes Barnes. He attended schools in May and Gage, Oklahoma areas.

While in his late teens, Raymond spent a year in a CC camp. They did conservation work on how to save soil, build bridges, dams etc from washing away, which helped him a lot in his future of farming for himself.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army as a volunteer a few days after Pearl Harbor. While in the service, he married Bernadine E. McLain, on Oct. 5, 1942 in Wichita.

A year later he was sent overseas to the Pacific. For the next two years he served with the 1837 Ordnance Service and Maintenance Co, 5th Air Force. His unit served in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 until 1945 in New Guinea, New Britan, Mootal, Phillipine, Le Shima and Tachekawa Airfield, Japan. On Oct. 5, 1945 he arrived back in California, but it was not until November that he was able to return home.

He was a member of the Tom Schwinn American Legion Post No 90 and enjoyed fishing.

He retired as a farmer, south of Wellington, but continued to assist his sons with farming decisions.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine of the home; six sons, Elbert Barnes and his wife Marsha, Herbert and his wife Donna Barnes, George Barnes and his wife Mary, Daryl Barnes and his wife Rachelle, Merlin Barnes and his wife Rachelle and Max Eldon Barnes; one sister, Darlene Carson; six grandchildren, Dana Neal, David Barnes and Warren Barnes, Emily Barnes, Jessica Barnes and Lisa Barnes; one step grandson, John Harrison; and six step great-grandchildren, Derek, Robert John, Steven Louis, Sara Marie, Susanna Lyn and Rachel Keren.
