Gustave emigrated to the United States in approximately 1900. His older brother Adolf had emigrated to the US in 1895. While Adolf lived in Brooklyn (New York City), Gustave made his home in rural Johnstown (Cambria County), Pennsylvania. In approximately 1908, Gustave married Albertina Schendel, another German emigrant from Poland. At this time, it is not known whether Gustave and Albertina knew each other before coming to the US.

Thelma Albertina, born in approx 1912
Olga B., born in 1913
Edna F., born in 1916
Emily Amelia, born/died in 1920
Frederick August, born 1921
Eric "Urick" (birth unknown), died in 1922
Edward Carl, born 1923
2 other sons - Alfred & Bobby - died in infancy
Gustave died on April 7, 1957. His wife Albertina died 12 years later on October 14, 1969.
