John L. Grier was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted for service on 12 Aug 1861 with the Cavalry Company formed by his uncle, Rufus Barringer. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on 1 Oct 1861 and continued to serve in this capacity when the Company was incorporated into Confederate service as Co. F, 1st NC Cavalry on 21 Oct 1861. Grier died of typhoid fever at New Hanover Courthouse, VA on 24 Aug 1862. (Source: Ancestry.com benfc77)
