A Woman Greatly Beloved in Cabarrus and Meckleuburg Counties Passes To Rest.
Mrs. Margaret Barringer Grier, whose extreme illness was noted in Sunday’s Observer, died at 7o’clock that morning, at the home of her son, Dr. Samuel Grier, at Harrisburg. The body was brought to Charlotte and interred in Elmwood, after an impressive funeral services at the Second Presbyterian Church, at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. John W. Stagg, assisted by Rev. Dr. Howerton, and were attended by a large concourse of Charlotte people, Mrs. Grier having long been held in loving affection by the people of this city.
Mrs. Grier was born on the 12th of February, 1808, and was, herefore, very near 90 years of age. She had been in failing health for a year past, but previous to last winter, when she was attacked by grip, she had known no illness for 30 years. She was a native of Cabarrus County, and was of German extraction on her father’s side, her grand parents being born in Wurtemburg, Germany. They settled in Pennsylvania in 1760. On her maternal side, she was of English descent, her grandfather being Matthew Brandon, who settled in Rowan County in 1746.
Mrs. Grier was twice married. Her first husband was John Boyd, a brother of Benjamin Boyd, of Charlotte, to whom she was married in June, 1825. Her only child wan a daughter, the late Mrs. Henry B. Williams. In less than a year, she was wife, mother and widow. In 1831 she married Samuel Andrew Grier, and of the four sons and four daughters by this marriage, but three survive — Mr. William Grier and Mrs. Wm. Doby, in Arkansas, and Dr. Sam Grier, of Harrisburg. She was a sister of the late General Rufus Barringer, Judge Victor C. Barringer, Hon. D. M. Barringer; Col. Paul Barringer, of Mississippi; Mrs. Wm. Means, Mrs. Chas. Harris, and Mrs. Edwin Harris, of Cabarrus.
She lived to see the fifth generation in her family.
