George Cline was born in Germany sometime around 1831. By the summer of 1862 he was living in Detroit, and making a living as a cigarmaker. George Cline enlisted in Company B on July 24, 1862 at Detroit. He was one of the very first men to enlist in the 24th. He was appointed to be the 5th Sergeant of Company B. He was mustered into service on August 14, 1862. He was shot in the abdomen and killed at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. It is possible that he was killed in the morning action again Archer's men. There was no time to bury those killed in the afternoon's battle. By the time the the Union forces recaptured the first day's field, the dead had been stripped by the Confederates and the summer heat had rendered most of the bodies unrecognizable. Sergeant Cline's body was buried in a marked grave, and today, his body rests in the Michigan section at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
