Merylyn T. Gilk, age 90, Albany, MN died Sunday, October 2, 2005 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, Albany, MN.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 8, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Albany, MN. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Albany, MN. Arrangements were made by Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN.
Merylyn Gilk was born December 18, 1914 in Albany, MN to Robert and Clara (Koglin) Christen. She married Waldamar E. Gilk on May 11, 1935 in Albany, MN. Merylyn was organist at Immanuel Lutheran Church for 38 years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid since 1946. She also was organist for services at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home for many years. In 1981 she was named Outstanding Senior Citizen of Stearns County. She was president of the 7 County Area Senior Citizen for 3 years. Merylyn served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Farmers Union for 21 years. She was president of the Albany Senior Group for 20 years, President of Albany Legion Auxiliary for 3 years. She was on the board of directors of Albany Area Hospital and Mother of Mercy Nursing Home. She was on the District 2004 School Board from 1953 to 1968. She was on the Albany Area School Board from 1980 to 2000. Merylyn worked for fingerhut in St. Cloud from 1961 to 1977. She served as President and Secretary of the Amalgamated Garment Industry Union and attended an International Union meeting. She was active in starting the Albany Community Center Dining site. She was president of the Catholic Charities Albany dining site and was President of the Albany Area Community Center since 1981. She was Vice-President of AAL Branch 167 for many years.
Survivors include sons and daughters, Lyle (Yvonne) Gilk of Richland, WA; Arlon (Claudia) Gilk of Albany, MN; Merylyn (Ralph) Wentzlaff of Livingston, TX; Gwendolyn Gratke of Sauk Rapids, MN; brothers, Robert (Lorraine) Christen of Fridley, MN; Delbert (Ronette) Christen of Richmond, MN; 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Waldamar on Feb. 17, 1977, daughter, Carolyn Harren, son, Darrel Gilk, brothers, Talbert Christen and Wilbert Christen.
