Brattleboro- Elaine Kelley Lapan, 76, of Fuller Drive, died peacefully Sunday morning, February 25, 2007 at Eden Park Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family following a chronic illness.

Mrs. Lapan was born in Haverhill, Mass on May 4, 1930, the daughter of William and Ellen Marie (Burchell) Kelley.

She was raised and educated in Haverhill and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1948, with high honors and was the recipient of the May Heyward Johnson Award.

Mrs. Lapan went on to attend Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia then attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs where she earned her B.A. in Education. She received the Fanny Hatheway boss prize for excellence in French. During her junior year at UConn she studied abroad at La Sorbonne,U.de Paris, France.

In 1975 Mrs. Lapan received her Masters in Education from Keene State College in Special Education with emphasis on Learning Disabilities.

Her first teaching position from 1952-1953 was at Black River High School in Ludlow, Vermont where she taught French and English. In 1953 she moved to Brattleboro and taught French and English at St. Michael�s High School.

During 1954 -1955 she was an elementary teacher of Grades 3, 4 and 5 contained in one room at East Dummerston School. From 1969-1991 she was a Title One special education teacher at Brattleboro Union High School.

Her memberships included, National Education Association, Vermont Education Association, Windham Southeast Education Association and Fulbright Alumni Association of which she participated in with Fulbright�s Teacher Exchange Program in England, 1984-1985.

Mrs. Lapan was a member of the American Association of University Women, served as an R.S.V.P volunteer and also generously volunteered her time at Bridgid�s Kitchen. She was also a member of LaRonde, a French speaking group,and held membership with the local chapter of the Red Hat Society. For many years she was an active member of the local retired teachers group.

With her late husband, she was a longtime communicant of Saint Michaels� Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Lapan was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and culture.

She loved to travel and had visited five continents, enjoyed classical music and opera and with her family enjoyed vacations to the Massachusetts shore.

On July 11, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the Bradford section of Haverhill she was married to Thomas K. Lapan. Her husband predeceased her on September 14, 2000.

Survivors include, one daughter Kathleen Lapan of Brattleboro, four sons; Stephen Lapan of Vernon, Jerome Lapan of Carlsbad, CA, Christopher Lapan of Putney and Terrence Lapan of Gardnerville,NV, two sisters, Patricia O�Donnell and husband Bernard of Bourne, MA and Virginia Gorecki and husband Stanley of Orangevale, CA, one granddaughter, Amy Johndrow of West Haven, CT, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one sister, Margaret Faraci who died in 1973.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Michaels� Catholic Church on Walnut Street. Committal Rites and burial will follow in the Lapan family lot in Saint Michaels� parish cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the Atamaniuk Funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 9 P.M. A Catholic prayer service will be conducted at the funeral home at 8:00 P.M.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Lapan�s name may be made to; Bridgid�s Kitchen, 47 Walnut Street, Brattleboro, VT. 05301.
