Job Thomas and Esther Land

Job Thomas was born about 1787, probably in Union County, South Carolina, to Joseph and Keziah Thomas. When he was a young boy, his father moved the family to the frontier of Western North Carolina. Sometime about 1812, likely in Burke County, North Carolina, he married Esther Land. She was born about 1789 in Union County, South Carolina, to Isaac Land.

Job and Esther Thomas were enumerated in Burke County, North Carolina, in 1820 and in Macon County, North Carolina, in 1830. Sometime in the 1830s, they moved to what was then Union County, Georgia. They were listed there on the 1840 and 1850 census. In 1856, the area in which they lived became Towns County, Georgia. They appear together on the 1860 census of Towns County, Georgia.

Esther Land Thomas died sometime in 1860s and is probably buried at Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Job Thomas appears on the 1870 census of Towns County, Georgia, as the head of a household that included his son Jeptha P. Thomas’s family.

Job Thomas last appears on the tax list in 1876. He probably died late in 1876 as he is not listed on the 1877 tax list. He is buried at Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery, Towns County, Georgia, and has a modern marker that reads “Job Thomas and Son.”

Children of Job Thomas and Esther Land:

1. Clarissa Thomas was born about 1813 in North Carolina. She married Jehu “Jake” Morrison. She died after 1870, likely in Towns County, Georgia.

2. Unknown Daughter Thomas was born 1815-1820 in North Carolina. She either died or married between 1830 and 1840.

3. Elizabeth Thomas was born about 1817 in North Carolina. She married Andrew Jackson “Jack” Hughes on April 15, 1835, in Macon County, North Carolina. She died after 1880, likely in Union County, Georgia.

4. David Thomas was born about 1820 in North Carolina. He married Jane A. Morrison. He died about 1878 in Towns County, Georgia. Extra comment: If Job was indeed buried next to his son, it is probably David as they died within a year of each other.

5. Jeptha P. Thomas was born about 1830 in Macon County, North Carolina. He married Mary Ann “Polly” Hughes on February 17, 1851, in Union County, Georgia. After her death, he married Millie Walker on July 15, 1871, in Towns County, Georgia. He died August 21, 1890, in Towns County, Georgia.

Extra Comments:

Asa was a Thompson from Habersham County, but somehow local folks have latched on to his being a son of Job Thomas. No idea why. If Job was indeed buried next to a son, it is probably David as they died within a year of each other.

There is a family story/legend/tale that Job is buried under the Susan B. Harris Chapel. The chapel was to have been built over a cemetery. To be completely honest the burial location of Job Thomas is UNknown.

There is also a family story/legend/tale that one of Rebecca Land Plott's sisters was buried next to Isaac Plott, who was buried next to Rebecca in Old Union Cemetery. The question presented, "Is the alleged Rebecca's sister next to Isaac to be Esther Land Thomas?" We don't know. Esther's burial location is unknown.
