Henry Shopbell was 25, and living in New London, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Nov 4, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov 25, 1861.

Shopbell was taken prisoner during the battle at Helena, Arkansas, on Sept 20, 1862. He was exchanged on Nov 20, 1862, and returned to duty.

He mustered out of the service on Dec 5, 1864, at Memphis when his enlistment expired.
