Arthur A. Nickels age 86, of 1511 Cherry Rd. Manitowoc, died Wednesday evening January 9, 2013 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center.
Arthur was born on March 20, 1926 at Mishicot, son of the late Charles and Augusta (Sehloff) Nickels. As a child the family moved to Manitowoc and Art attended school in Manitowoc. On July 18, 1944 Art was inducted into the United States Army Air Corps serving in the Atlantic Theatre in a B-17 Bomber and was discharged on June 26, 1946.
On May 1, 1947 Art was married to the former Audrey Meyer. On January 1, 1950 Art began his career with the Manitowoc Fire Department and retired as Asst. Chief in May of 1987. Over the years Art also worked as a carpenter for Gene Heier Builders.
Art was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Manitowoc's Golden K Kiwanis, the Musician's Union and a life member of Otto-Oas VFW Post #659 of Manitowoc. He had a long career involvement in music playing three instruments: clarinet, saxophone and trumpet. Art played for the Gene Heier Orchestra, Jay Wells and the Red Ravens, Art Nickels Lakeshore Grenadiers, Jerry Krueger Orchestra and was the last surviving member of the Mystic Moods. In the past he was the drum major for the Lincoln High School Band and the Manitowoc Marine Band. Art enjoyed playing at the Manitowoc Senior Center and was proudly inducted into the Wisconsin Polka Hall of Fame. As a private pilot he was a founding member of the Mishicot Flying Club later known as the Manitowoc Flying Club.
Survivors include his wife: Audrey Nickels, Manitowoc; seven children and their spouses: James (Mary Jane) Nickels, Manitowoc; David (Pat) Nickels, Manitowoc; Michael (Julie) Nickels, Appleton; Mark Nickels, Manitowoc; Jeff Nickels, Waunakee; Barb (Mark) Anderson, Crystal Lake, IL; Peter (Shannon) Nickels, Manitowoc; 16 grandchildren: Stephan Nickels and his fiancée: Theresa, Christopher Nickels, Andrea (Sean) Roberts, Jennifer (Brock) Wetenkamp, Justin Nickels, Thomas (Christine) Nickels, Eric Nickels, Joseph Nickels, Brandon Nickels, Amber Nickels, Erika Nickels, Anthony Nickels, Brett Anderson, Joseph Anderson, Zackary Nickels, Marissa Nickels; 3 great grandchildren: McKenzie Nickels, Ava Wetenkamp, Nadia Roberts; two sisters: Ruth Kuchenbecker, Manitowoc; Jeanette Berge, Greendale; one sister-in-law: Bernadine Swoboda, Sheboygan; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles and Augusta Nickels; four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday January 14, 2013 at the Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 916 Pine St. Manitowoc. The Rev. Paul Schossow and Rev. Nicholas Maglietto will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Otto-Oas VFW Post #659 of Manitowoc will provide military honors. Relatives and friends may call at the Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, 818 State St. Manitowoc on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in Art's name can be made for Immanuel Ev.
