Gerrit Pennings, 83, of Orange City died Wednesday, October 1, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

Funeral service was Monday, October 6, at 10:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiated. Interment was at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Pennings was born February 24, 1925, at Orange City, the son of Henry J. and Johanna (Gesink) Pennings. He was raised at Orange City, where he attended the Christian School.

On May 25, 1949, he married Irene Kathleen Van Rooyen at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. They farmed at Orange City, first on a family farm. Since 1960, they have had their own farm.

In December of 2006, they moved into Orange City. For the past six years, he has been homebound for health reasons.

He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church. He thoroughly enjoyed farming, and he loved interacting with his grandchildren, especially for 4-H calves. He also liked to read farm-related articles.

Survivors include his wife; seven daughters and their husbands, Carol and Gene Van Meeteren of Hartley, Cheryl and Mark Palsma and Marcia and Arlan Scholten, all of Orange City, Deb and Greg Rosters of Sibley, Dianne and John Van Wyk and Nelva and Harlan Huitink, all of Orange City, and Rachel and Craig Vander Zee of Marion, South Dakota; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four brothers and a sister and their spouses, Lawrence and Marthann Pennings of Roseland, Minnesota, Clarence and Henrietta Pennings of Orange City, Helen Anderson of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Milton and Judy Pennings and Harold and Evelyn Pennings, all of Orange City; three sisters-in-law and their spouses, Margaret Pennings of Kalamazoo, Kathleen and Gerrit Rozeboom of Sioux Center and Leora and Lee De Haan of Orange City; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Jack and Willie Van Rooyen of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; and 11 brothers and sisters and their spouses, Adrianna and Bill Nibbelink, Wilmyna Pennings,: Edna and John Fedders, Adrian and Coba Pennings, Henry Pennings, an infant, Engelbert and Lorraine Pennings, Gertrude Pennings,
Wilbur Pennings, Harriet Pennings, and Mathilda and Farrand Deur.

Memorials will be directed to the Orange City Christian School and Unity Christian High School in Orange City.
