83-Year Old Man is Traffic Victim
An 83-year-old retired shoemaker was struck by a car and killed Thursday night while walking across Kansas at Thirteenth, police reported.
Edward C. Freeby, 83, of 107 East Thirteenth apparently was on his way home when hit by a car driven by Delvea R. Griswold of 506 Clay, police said. The accident occurred at 9:45 p.m.
Miss Griswold was charged with speeding and failing to yield the right of way, officers said. Her car came south and hit Freeby as he crossed Kansas, according to police.
Freeby was born July 30, 1872, at Fort Wayne, Ind. He was a member of the Methodist church at Barnes, Kansas.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. R. L. Shannon of 2829 Kentucky, Mrs. Maxine Wertz of Sedalia, Mo., Mrs. Florence Christenson of the home, Mrs. Malinda Blasser of Compton, Calif., and Mrs. Doris Boulton of Riversia, Calif.
Three sons, G. C. Freeby of Erie, Kansas, Everett Freeby of 1505 Polk and Fred Freeby of Manhattan; a brother, Emva Freeby of Denver; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are to be announced by the Wall-Diffeniderfer mortuary.
The Friday evening Topeka State Journal carried this account of the death of a former Barnes man, Edd Freeby.
Funeral services were held from the Barnes Methodist Church Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clcok with Rev. J. U. Stalions in charge. Mrs. Elmer Brun and Dan Nanninga sang "The Old Rugged Cross". Mr. Nanninga sang "The Lord's Prayer". Mrs. Homer Oberhelman was the accompanist. Pall bearers were Joe Truhlicka, J. T. Poland, Matt Wiechman Jr., Frank Dalrymple, Ira Crissman and Bert Cook.
Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery.
Following is his life history:
Cyrus Edward Freeby, son of George and Malinda, was born July 30, 1872 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and departed this life September 29, 1955 in Topeka, Kansas. He came with his parents, as a small boy (four years) to Kansas, where the family made their home on a farm two and three-quarters miles southwest of town.
In May of 1895 he was united in marriage to Barbara Waldhelm and to this union were born nine children: Five daughters: Mrs. R. L. Shannon of 2829 Kentucky, Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Maxine Wertz of Sedalia, Mo.; Mrs. Florence Christenson of the home; Mrs. Malinda Blasser of Compton, Calif.; and Mrs. Doris Boulton of Riveria, Calif.; four sons: G. C. Freeby of Erie, Kansas; Everett Freeby of 1505 Polk, Topeka, Kansas; and Fred of Manhattan; and Floyd, who preceded him in death in 1949.
For many years he had a "Shoe Repair" in Sabetha, Kansas; and later moved to Centralia, where he lived until the time of his wife's death in 1942. From that time he visited among his children, but made his home at Mrs. Florence Christenson's in Topeka.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, Barnes, Kansas. This is the church where his parents attended and himself as a small boy.
Surviving are his five daughters and three sons; seventeen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and a brother, Emory, Denver, Colorado.
