George W Freeby, of Co. F, enrolled Sep. 22, 1861 in Waterloo by Capt. Merrill as a Private; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 20. He was 5Œ 9 tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. Born Jan. 14, 1841 in Allen Co., IN, employed as a farmer, single, resident of Hamilton, in Steuben Co., IN. Mustered out after serving 3 years Apr. 20, 1865 in Indianapolis, IN with rank of Private. Notes: His sister, Louisa, married James G. Dirrim of Co. F. George was taken by hospital boat W.W. Crawford to Marine Hospital at Evansville, IN, arriving May 13, 1862. Listed as absent sick from May 2, 1862; failed to report his condition or whereabouts and was pronounced a deserter in Chattanooga by muster Aug. 19, 1862. He voluntarily returned to Company Nov. 23, 1864, with papers from Brown General Hospital in Louisville, KY, showing admittance for chronic diarrhea and detailed to do light duty in hospital Dec. 21, 1862; was General Court Martialed and honorably acquitted Dec. 24, 1864. He filed Invalid Pension Application to receive Pension Certificate #114867 Jan. 21, 1867. Married Matilda (Malinda Jane) Richey 1867 in DeKalb Co., IN. Resident of Marshall Co., KS, in 1878; in Berry, KS, in 1891-92. Resided at Barnes City, Washington Co., KS, 1900 until he died Sep. 1, 1931. Buried there in Maplewood Cemetery.
