Matthew Darling was part of the founders of the Darling Shipyard. He bought land from the Van Brunt family on the west side of Port Jefferson Harbor and with Sylvester Smith, also from Smithtown, established a shipyard there as early as 1832. On September 2nd, 1834, Matthew Darling and Sylvester Smith were granted "On the West Side of the Harbor a Dock...for 40 years, 100 feet on shore and 125 into Bay.."
