In the 1830s there was an itinerant priest (Father John McDonald) from St. John the Baptist parish in Perth, Lanark County, Upper Canada. He served missions including the Wolford Township, Grenville County, Upper Canada. Father McDonald kept a diary which listed parishioners in the area he served in the timeframe 1831-1836. In this diary, there were listed three John Roches in Wolford Township during this time. Two (father and son) were each designated by the priest as being an “oldcomer” and one was designated as being a “newcomer”:
-- John Roche Sr. "oldcomer" and Mrs. John Sr. and son Martin at Concession 1 Lot 26.
-- John Roche Jr. "oldcomer" and Mrs. John Jr. at Concession 1 Lot 27.
-- John Roche "newcomer" and James Roche at Concession 2 Lot 14. (Next door to this John Roche lived James and Barney Henry – brothers of Ann Henry.)

John Roche, the “newcomer”, had been born in Ireland about 1778. In 1834, at the time he married Ann Henry (age about 24), John was a widower and about 56 years old. They had ten children. In addition to the five children linked below, there were five more children: John (born about 1835), Barnabas (born about 1836), Frances (born about 1843), Joseph (born about 1844) and Teresa (born about 1846). The nine children alive at that time appeared in the 1851 Wolford census as part of the John Roche and Ann Henry family. (Elizabeth was born after the 1851 census).

The “newcomer” John Roche has no known family relationship to the “oldcomers” father and son, John Roche Sr. and John Roche Jr. (who married Ann Ryan). In any event, because there were two separate John and Ann Roche families in the same area at the same time, some genealogical trees appear to have the descendants combined into one, very large, Roche-connected family.
