Born illegitimate in Norway about January 1825 to Berger Johnsen & Mari Trygsdatter. Married Karin Hansdatter in 1854 and later in 1873 emigrated to New Zealand with his wife and Children on the SS Hovding (Arriving in New Zealand in December 1873). Thorval died on Christmas Day 1881 and is interred in the Makaretu Cemetery alongside his son (Anders), his Daughter in law (Sophie), his Grandson (John)and his Grand Daughter (Hilda).
