Actually born and died in Auchmithe.
This stone was erected by John Cargill resident in **town of Auchmithie in memory of Isobel B*** his spouse who departed this life 20.8.1743 aged 56y and Helen Cargill their daughter who departed this life 22.1.1743 at whose head this stone stands and for whom the said was designed before the ** death, they had also procured betwixt them besides the said Helen other 5 children John their 1st born and only surviving child at this present date and Robert who departed this life 29.5.1727 aged 16y. Agnes, James and Catharine who d. in infancy and are near this stone interred. John Cargill, Shipmaster in Auchmithy husband of Agnes Cargill d. at Arbroath 10.2.1776 aged 67y. Also David Cargill d. This Stone was set up here by John CARGILL resident of Sea town of Auchmithie in memory of Isobelle BEWS his spouse who departed this life the 20 of August 1743 aged 56 years and Helen CARGILL the daughter who departed this life the 22 January 1743 at whose head this stone stands and for whome the stone was designed before the mothers death. They had also procreate betwixt then besides the said HELEN five other children viz JOHN their first born and only surving child at this present date and ROBERT who deeparted this life 29th May 1727 of age 16 years and AGNES, JAMES and CATHERINE who died in infancy and are near this stone interred. Here lies the body of John CARGILL shipmaster in Auchmithie who was the husband of AGNES CARGILL. He died st Arbroath 6th of February 1771 aged 67 years. Also here lies the body of DAVID CARGILL their son who died May 15th 1771 aged 22 years. Revised by PETER SWANKIE. We that survive sooner or later must. Her corpse lies here now crumbling into dust. While that her better part triumphs above the highest reaches of any human love and left behind within this silent bed as fine a girl as ever her corner bred. WILLIAM SWANKIE and MARGARET LAWSON. [ on side of stone ] MARGARET SPINK wife of PETER SWANKIE died 19th January 1899 aged 92 years.
