Cooper was a son of Pearey Kirton and Mary Ann Cooper. He began his apprenticeship in 1842 under his father on a Royal Navy Ship, the SS Battasera. He was awarded a certificate of Competency as Master, Merchant Service, 15 Nov 1856. Thereafter he became a Commander and Agent of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, retiring 30 April 1902. During this period of time, he founded the Kirton Shipping Company in 1884 which is still an active family business, the company claiming to continue to be run by his descendants, although this has yet to be proven. He and his first wife (unknown) had one son Edward Cooper Kirton 1845 - 29 Aug 1864 who drowned at sea on the HMS Orlando. Cooper had ten children with his second wife Emily Jane Nichol whom he married in Malta 2 April 1862. Several of these died as young children. Those buried in this cemetery include, Henry Stewart 20 Apr 1979 - 2 Dec 1884, Philip Francis age 46 buried 22 Nov 1913, Robert Pearey Mar 1873 - 11 Oct 1878, and Wilfred Gordon 15 Jun 1877 - 13 Feb 1880. The children's information is on the Kirton family monument, still preserved next to one of the boundary walls of the cemetery. I do not know whether the monument was originally placed in its current location or was moved aside following the Second World War in order to be preserved after being "lucky" enough not to be destroyed by the bombs which fell on Ta'Braxia.
