Fred Hillery Brewer was born on November 9, 1890 in Jackson County, the son of Hillery and Julia Winchester Brewer. His siblings include a twin brother, Ed, other brothers, Jeff, Harry, Herman, Rollie, Grover, Ray, Louie and Hallie, and a sister, Mrs. Cora Ragsdale, all of Carbondale.

He married Cora Lou Dewey who died January 17, 1960. He leaves two sons and a daughter, Ryburn and Carl of Carbondale and Mrs. Mary Lukenbill of Dixon.

Mr. Brewer was a car inspector for the Illinois Central Railroad. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge 670 in Murphysboro and the Carman's Union.

Mr. Brewer died of cancer at the home of his son at the age of 72.
