John/Indian John Youngdeer Tidwell became a blacksmith & lived in Paulding Co., GA. John was abt 8-12 years old when his father Young Deer died.
After his marriage to Betsy, he continued to live in Forsyth Co. for a number of years.
Sometime in 1835, he went to IT, but soon returned to GA to raise his family. In March of that year, Tidwell and Charles Vicery (1/4 Cherokee, son of Henry and Charlotte Vickery) had been charged by the solicitor with having an "affray" on public street in Cumming and fighting in a "war-like manner" in a public place in town. A grand jury hearing the evidence failed to indict the 2 young men.
*By 1840, the family had moved to Cobb Co., GA.
*He is listed on the 1850 Census: Cobb Co., GA, with his wife Cresa (short for Lucretia).
*After marrying Lucretia in 1842, he was living with his family in 1860 in Paulding Co., GA, where several children were born and married.
By his 2 wives he had 17 mixed-blood children.
*In 1888, he applied for Cherokee citizenship through the Ordinary in Paulding Co.; his statements were read before the commission at Tahlequah, and James Hendricks, his 1st coustin, gave testimony on 04 Sep to support his claim as a descendant of the Cherokee race. He made this statement about their family relationship: "His father and my mother were brother and sister. I have seen John Tidwell. He was at our house and some 2 weeks before we emigrated to this country. He was some taller than me. He was older than me.
The father of John Tidwell was Ah-wee-nee-tah sinnifying Young Deer. I was bout 12 years old at the time of our emigration in 1932."
*John & Lucretia moved to IT in 1889 and settled at Stilwell in the Goingsnake Dist., CN, IT. On 24 Jul 1900, he applied for enrollment as a Cherokee by blood before the Dawes Commission to the 5 Civilized Tribes. He told the commission that he was 85 yrs old, born in GA, and was a Cherokee by blood, a halbreed Indian. Two years later, he was placed on the "Final Cherokee Roll by Blood."[Source: Don Shadburn]
