Mrs Sarah Oxtoby, the highly esteemed and worthy mother of Thomas Oxtoby the well known landlord of the hotel at Mitchell, Iowa, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs Kersting, six miles east of Osage. The cause of demise was heart disease. On the succeeding day the remains of the deceased were tenderly taken by Mr & Mrs Kersting to Richmond, Illinois her former home to be interred beside those of her husband who die some years ago who is buried there. It was at Richmond, Illinois that Mrs Oxtoby was married to Richard Oxtoby, in 1857 and there she lived until about a year ago, since which time she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs Kersting.
Mrs Oxtoby was born in Edinboro, Scotland, and was 74 years of age at the date of her death. She was first married to Captain Flemming, commander of a sea vessel, by whom she had two sons, James T 15 Jun 1846. New York, NY & George W 20 Dec 1848, New York, NY. By her second marriage she had three sons and one daughter who survive their mother. One son at Mitchell, Thomas, is mentioned above. Another resides at Richmond, and the third in Kansas. The daughter, Mrs Kersting is the wife of our well known citizen B A Kersting with whom the community deeply sympathize in their affliction. Mrs Oxtoby was for the greater period of her life devote and consistent member of the Scottish Presbyterian Church and was universally beloved and esteemed by all who knew her.
