Samuel was born in Ursanback, St. Bern, Switzerland. He was the son of Jakob and Maria (Gristan) Leibundgut. His father passed away when he was 4 years old. He and his sister were passed around to others to earn board and keep. In Nov 1868 he married Rosa Egli from Gosow, St. Gallen. They had 10 children 7 boys and 3 girls, 4 boys died as infants in Switzerland.

In April 1893 the family came to America, to Benton, Saline, Arkansas. He was there about 9 years and there Mary age 11 and Earnst age 6 months died there.

In May 1902 moved to Highland Illinois and worked on a farm, then in an embroidery factory.

In 1903 moved to Belleville, Illinois and worked at Bush Glass works.

In 1908 went to Keokuk, Iowa and bought a small farm, where he lived for about 15 years. His wife Rosa died (September 2, 1923) there and was buried in Keokuk Cemetery.

After his wife passed away he moved back to Highland, Illinois and worked at the old folks home as a helper until about 1930 when he bought himself into the home.
