It is written that his grandfather, Peter
Hanger Sr. (1729-1802) who settled in
Augusta County, VA in 1750, was an emigrant
from PA whose family settled there having
crossed the ocean from their homeland of
Germany.
He married in PA to Anna Sabina Hannah
Gabbert (1724-1801). Both died on the farm
now owned by the City of Staunton and were
buried there in the churchyard of Trinity
Episcopal church.

John was born to Peter Hanger II and
Catherine Link.

John studied medicine and became a
physician and surgeon. He practised in the
area of Staunton and Waynesboro.

Records indicate he enlisted in the army
on Aug. 29, 1814 but was discharged one
month later.

On Apr. 4, 1822 he was married by Conrad
Speece to Mary Allen (Dec. 25, 1797-
Jan. 27, 1882) of Augusta County.
Known children:
It is believed all were born in New Hope
except the youngest who was born in
Waynesboro.

(1) Peter Milton (Nov. 20, 1822-aft.1880
but bef. 1900) who married Harriet Kennerly
Maupin (ca1833-1910s) on Jan. 29, 1853.
They lived in Shelbina, Shelby County, MO
and are likey buried in the cemetery there
although there are no markers.

(2) James Dorsey (1823-Mar. 1882), who
died in Augusta County, was unmarried.

(3) Frances "Fannie" (1824-1889) married
Dr. Samuel Kennerly, who had studied
under Dr. Hanger prior to entering the
Medical College of Virginia. They moved
to Shelbina, Shelby County, MO in 1876.

(4) Elizabeth Virginia (b. 1826) married
a cousin, George Robinson Hanger (1830-
1903) who is buried in Hanger Cemetery in
Augusta County. He was a s/o William A.
Hanger (ca1807-ca1834) and Rebecca Silling.

(5) Emily S. (b. ca1828)

(6) William W. Stuart (Feb. 21, 1833-
Oct. 12, 1834)

(7) John M. (Sept.1836-bet.1900 and 1910)
married Jane Frances Weade (Mar.12, 1838-
1910s) in 1860. She was a d/o Henry Weade
and Hettie Mohler of VA. John was a postal
clerk. They had four children:
(1) Lelia Allen Hanger (1860-1861)
(2) Ernest Lee Hanger (July 20, 1862-Jan.
14, 1943) died in Fitzgerald, GA. On Oct. 23,
1889 in Rowan County, NC he married Alice
Lowery (Aug. 20, 1870-June 13, 1950) native
of Salisbury of that county, who died in
Meriweather County, GA.
Their three children were -
Mildred Lee (Aug. 1890-Mar. 5, 1935),unm.;
Ernest Lowery (1900-Dec. 7, 1960); and
John Wm. (b. June 17, 1910).
(3) William Baylor Hanger (1865-1866)
(4) Harry Miller Hanger (May 24, 1880-
Apr. 6, 1965) who was born in
Fishersville, VA and died unmarried.
He is buried in same cemetery as his
Hanger grandparents.
(note - people confuse the above John M.
with John Marshall of same age who died
in 1917)

(8) William Allen (1838-Jan. 3,1889)
married Barbara Antoinette "Nettie" Koiner
(1844-1923). They had a son -
William Lee Hanger (Jan.1869-June 12, 1914)
married Susan Frances "Fannie" Blackwell
(Feb.1863-Sept. 11, 1958) in 1892. She was a
d/o William and Eve (Livick) Blackwell and
died in Baltimore, MD. They had two daughters:
a) Gladys K. (Apr. 29, 1894-May 21, 1920)
who married Alexander Allen; and
b) Helen Urso (Oct. 19, 1896-June 2, 1946)
(died in Baltimore, MD) who married Wilfred
Elton Sparling (1898-1965) and had a
daughter, Helen Elton Sparling (Feb. 8,
1925-Aug. 9, 2012) whose husbands were
Thomas B. Jones (1924-1967) and Charles W.
Blount (1932-1998). She died in FL.

Both Gladys and Helen are buried in
Greenlawn Memorial Park Cem., Newport News
City, VA.
