The following information is from son Walter and daughter Esther.
Gabriel immigrated to the United States about 1891 from Finland. Married Anna L. Långsjö on July 31, 1897 in Manistee Michigan. He was a Laborer for a railroad in this city, then moved to Calumet, MI. in the UP, and worked in a copper mine. Then moved to Amasa and worked in an iron mine and later in an iron mine in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He bought a farm in Crystal Falls Township about 1907 where he spent the rest of his life. The farm needed a well. The farm was split by a road which later became State Highway 141. The barn and cattle were across this road from the home. Gabriel had the well dug next to the barn. He figured the cattle used more water then his family. He logged his farm in the winter months and worked for others cutting logs during the winter months.

The sauna, built near the home, was a structure of logs, cut from Gabriel's land. This was used at least once a week by the whole family. It was not uncommon for the whole family to "take" a sauna together. A sauna was used frequently as a birthing room as this was the cleanest and most germ free place on the farm.

Gabriel's birth place, Sulasalmi House Number 9, Salmivaara, a small village that was in the Kuolajärvi parish. Prior to 1867, the parish was Kemijärvi. Russia took over a large part of Kuolajärvi parish after the 1939 war and what remained was renamed Salla Parish. The province was Oulu at the time of Gabriel's birth but now is in the Lappi province. The northern part of Oulu province was renamed Lappi.
