The son of Christian & Mary Zeigler, in 1860 he was a laborer and plasterer living in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Perry County August 5, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed as a deserter to date November 25, 1862, but returned to duty on March 28, 1863, under President Lincoln's amnesty proclamation and honorably discharged with his company May 26, 1863.
2. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 11, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and discharged by surgeon's certificate June 21, 1865.
His obituaries in both the Perry County Times and Carlisle Sentinel reverse his two terms of service.

He married Tauzine L. ? and fathered Sherman H. (b. @1867), Raymond (b. @1868), and Mary (b. 1869). Tauzine died in 1877, and he married Hallie lnu., fathering Harry E. (b. @1885). Cause of his death is listed as "valvular heart disease."
