The son of Christian & Mary (Adams) Zeigler, George Zeigler's birth date as shown here is likely one year too late. I think it more likely he was born in 1823, but I can't prove it except to point to a stated age at enlistment in 1862 of 39.

He married Catharine Swanger and fathered Mary Ellen (b. 06018/48), Peter (b. 11/29/49), and William (b. 1854). Catharine died September 3, 1856, and he married Lizzie Hughes January 26, 1860, near Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, fathering Annie (b. 12/09/60), George (b. 03/17/64), Charles (b. 10/06/66), Ralph (b. 03/10/69), Franklin Madison (b. 06/10/70), and Amelda E. (b. 02/21/72 - married a Boyer). In 1860, he was a laborer living in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 8" tall with light hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Carlisle July 25, 1862, mustered into federal service in Harrisburg August 6 as a private with Co. G, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg September 1, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 6 as a private with Co. A, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company on May 31, 1865. During this enlistment, he contracted a lung ailment at Petersburg, Virginia, that dogged him the rest of his life.

In 1890, he was living in Spring Township, Perry County. Lizzie died less than two months after George.
